Size 9 knitting needles or size needed to make gauge

Instructions:
Cast on 64 stitches.
Knit across first 6 rows to create a garter stitch border.
Begin pattern: row 1 - knit across all stitches, row 2 - purl 59 stitches, knit 5 stitches. This will create a flat garter stitch border up one side of the shawl. The other side is designed to curl in slightly along the edge.
Continue in pattern until the rectangle is 50” long, ending with row 2 of pattern.
Make buttonhole, knit 43 stitches, cast off 5 stitches, knit remaining 16 stitches. In next row, purl 17 stitches, cast on 5 stitches, purl 37 stitches, knit 5 stitches.
Continue in pattern for 11”.
Knit across next 6 rows to create the garter stitch border.
Cast off and hide all yarn ends.
Block shawl to size.
The buttons are sewn at the end opposite the buttonhole - 4” from the rolled edge, 10”, 14” and 18” from the lower edge.
Tips:
This easy-to-knit and versatile rectangular shawl features three big buttons and one buttonhole. It can be worn in several different ways - both sides even using the lower button, asymmetrical using the upper button or buttoned in the middle.
Gauge: 16 stitches = 4”, 22 rows - 4”.
Finished size of shawl is 16” x 62”. It can easily be made wider (cast on more stitches) or longer, depending upon your personal preference.
